On the Weather Map…
On the surface map… surface high pressure, in the wake of a cold front that has turned stationary along a line from central Mississippi.. central Louisiana and southeastern Texas and then southwestward into northeastern Mexico, is located over the Dakotas. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds are northerly.
On the upper air map… a broad trough, or line, of low pressure extends from Hudson Bay over much of the USA. Within the counterclockwise flow around the low, a eastward moving upper air disturbance is located southwestward from the central US plains into southwest Texas and northern Mexico. As a result of the upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are west southwesterly at 85 to 90 mph.
What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…
An overrunning pattern, where gulf moisture is flowing from the south on top of the colder surface based air, continues over the area in advance of the upper level low pressure disturbance to our west. Light rain and drizzle will continue with rain showers possible as the system moves overhead by tonight. Current short range high resolution model data and NWS guidance suggests that rainfall through tonight will average 1/10th inch or less.
As the initial disturbance moves east of the area, clouds and rain chances will decrease by later tonight into tomorrow.
Another series of upper level disturbances and a surface cold front will approach the area by late tomorrow night into Friday with clouds and increasing/thickening clouds and higher rain chances appearing as early as late Friday. Precipitation amounts, during this period, will average 1/4 inch or less.
In the wake of the front on Saturday afternoon, clouds and rain chances will persist Saturday night into Sunday and through the first half of next week as another overrunning pattern develops. After a bit of a warm up on Saturday, much cooler temperatures will be apparent for Sunday into the new week before a warming trend kicks in again late Tuesday into Wednesday.
