Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Thursday / 13 April 2017

.. No Fronts or Air Mass Changes Seen Over the Seven Days Ahead..
.. Better Rain Chances with a Disturbance Early Next Week ..
.. Otherwise Isolated Rain Showers Possible Each Day ..

On this Thursday… a low pressure area is over southeastern Colorado. Surface high pressure is over the southeastern USA. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds across south central Texas are southeasterly.

In the upper levels of the atmosphere, a trough, or line, of low pressure is along and offshore of the west coast of the USA with another trough over the northeastern USA. A ridge, or line, of high pressure extends from central and eastern Texas into the lower Mississippi Valley. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over south central Texas are southwesterly at 20 to 30 mph.

The front, along the Texas coast, has washed out with our surface winds having returned south southeasterly. The return south southeasterly winds has increased the low level moisture and will allow temperatures to climb a bit for the latter part of the week into the weekend.

While we will likely see some sunshine, clouds will continue over the coming days. With daytime heating along with weak disturbances traveling eastward overhead, we could see an on-and-off slim chance of rain showers and thunderstorms through the remainder of the week and through our Easter weekend and even into next week with the nest rain chances Monday into Monday night as a low pressure disturbance passes. I do not expect any frontal passages and air mass changes over the next seven days. As a result, temperatures will be close to or a bit above seasonal averages over the next seven days.

NWS/Weather Prediction Center guidance suggests that, over the next seven days, we will see average rainfall amounts across south central Texas of 1/4 to 1/2 inch. At this point, other than the risk of dangerous lightning with any thunderstorm that develops, I do not see any risk of severe and/or inclement weather over the next seven days.

Have a good Thursday….

.. Front to Our Southeast Washes Out Quickly ..
.. After We See Return to a Southerly Wind, No Fronts or Air Mass Changes Seen ..
.. A Slim Chance of Rain Showers and Thunderstorms Each Day ..

On this Wednesday… a weak stationary front is located along the Texas coast with high pressure, behind the front, located over the Great Lakes region and the Ohio Valley. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds across south central Texas are east northeasterly.

In the upper levels of the atmosphere, a rather zonal (west-to-east) wind pattern prevails over the USA with weak troughs (lines of low pressure) over the southeastern USA with another over the southwestern USA. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over south central Texas are west northwesterly at 30 to 40 mph.

The weakening stationary front, along the Texas coast, will wash out over the next 6 to 12 hours with our surface winds quickly returning south southeasterly by late tonight into tomorrow. As a result, while we’ll see temperatures remain a few degrees below seasonal averages today, the return south southeasterly winds will increase moisture and allow temperatures to climb a bit for the latter part of the week.

While we will likely see a few periods of sunshine, the clouds will remain persistent over the next few days. With daytime heating along with weak disturbances traveling eastward overhead, we could see a daily slim chance of rain showers and thunderstorms through the remainder of the week and through our Easter weekend and even into next week. After the front to our southeast washes out and south southeasterly surface winds return, I do not expect any frontal passages and air mass changes over the next seven days.
