Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Monday / 10 April 2017

.. Unsettled Wet and Stormy Weather Pattern Through Tomorrow ..
.. Slim Rain Chances Late Week ..

On this Monday… a surface cold front extends southwestward from a surface low in northwestern Missouri into central Oklahoma and far west Texas near El Paso. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds across south central Texas are southerly.

In the upper levels of the atmosphere, an eastward moving low pressure disturbance is moving eastward over Nebraska with another trough.. or line.. of upper level low pressure extending southward from California into northwestern Mexico and the Baja Peninsula. An upper level ridge of high pressure extends northward from the Gulf of Mexico to along the USA eastern seaboard. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over south central Texas are westerly at 35 to 45 mph.

As we start the new week, an increasingly moist and unstable air mass prevails over our area as a surface cold front moves southeastward across the northern and western areas of Texas.

By midday and continuing through the afternoon and nighttime hours tonight, we’ll see the front move into our area with abundant lift. Numerous rain showers and thunderstorms will be the result with the possibility that a few of the thunderstorms may become severe with an associated hail and straight line thunderstorm wind threat. As the front moves overhead, it will weaken quickly and stall out overhead or just to the southeast of the area. This would, in addition, present a heavy rain risk with upwards of 1 to 3 inches of rain possible (with some isolated heavier totals) over our area. This will promote some urban and small stream flooding as well as some flash flooding in areas where heavier rains occur.

We’ll see rain shower and thunderstorm activity decrease by mid and late morning into the afternoon hours tomorrow as the front washes out to our southeast and the precipitation settles more into south Texas and along the Texas coast.

Clouds will tend to linger into Wednesday and Thursday with a slim chance of rain showers and thunderstorms.

Clouds may break a bit Friday into the weekend although there will continue to be isolated rain showers and thunderstorms possible.

Have a good Monday….
