TK’s Weather Discussion

Updated 845am CDT Monday / 17 June 2013

…. A Dry and Stable Weather Pattern over the Next Seven Days ….

On this Monday morning…. surface high pressure is over the southwest North Atlantic Ocean and the southeastern USA. A trough.. or line.. of surface low pressure extends south southwestward from Kansas across west Texas and eastern New Mexico into northern Mexico. Another high pressure area is over Colorado. Given this surface pressure pattern, surface winds are southerly across our area.

In the upper levels of the atmosphere… winds are generally zonal (west-to-east) across the USA. As a result of this upper air pattern, winds over south central Texas and the Austin metro area about 18,000 feet above the ground are northwesterly 20 to 30 mph.

It looks dry and summer like through the new week and through next weekend with the atmosphere continuing to be quite stable with general upper level high pressure area over the southern plains acting like a “lid” on the atmosphere. Temperatures will be at or above seasonal levels over the next seven days with no rain mentioned in the forecast.

The tropics also remain fairly quiet for now. A disturbed area of weather over the northwestern Caribbean Sea is expected to move west northwestward into the Yucatan Peninsula over the next 12 hours. It may emerge tomorrow into Wednesday over the Bay of Campeche where it could get better organized. All indications are that anything that does develop would stay further south and would, with time, affect Mexico. I’ll continue to watch this system carefully.

Have a good Monday night and Tuesday…
