… South Southwesterly Wind with Record Warmth Headed into Mid Week …
… Our Next Cold Front Passes Mid Day Wednesday …
… A Stronger Cold Front Due Mid Day Next Sunday …

On this Monday… a surface low pressure area is over southeastern Colorado with a northward moving warm front extending from the low into the northeastern Texas panhandle to along the Red River country of southern Oklahoma and Northern Texas then eastward into central Mississippi. As a result, our surface winds across south central Texas are southerly.

In the upper levels of the atmosphere.. the wind pattern continues to be rather zonal (generally west to east) with upper level low pressure areas centered east of Hudson Bay and off the west coast of British Columbia and northwestern Washington. Our upper level winds, at about 18,500 feet overhead, are westerly 10 to 20 mph.

The warm front, that passed northward through the area in the early afternoon hours on Sunday, has now passed well to our north with a moist maritime tropical air mass in place over our area.

As a result, warmer temperatures – along with abundant surface moisture – have returned. We’ll see some breaks in the overcast today but won’t see more widespread sunshine by tomorrow. A more pronounced southwesterly wind tomorrow into early Wednesday will allow for a rapid warmup with record highs expected in the area tomorrow.

Our next cold front is expected in the midday hours on Wednesday. This front will be fairly weak and, depending on when the front arrives, temperatures on Wednesday will still be well into the 80s. I do not expect any precipitation and little in the way of clouds as the front moves through the area.

Temperatures will cool a but for Wednesday night and Thursday into Friday when surface winds are expected to turn more southerly once again.

Clouds will increase a bit as low level moisture returns on the heels of the south southeasterly wind flow Friday night through Saturday and early Sunday.

The next cold front, this one a bit stronger, will move across the IH35 corridor midday next Sunday. Current indications are that we’ll see a few rain showers associated with the atmospheric lift ahead of and just along the front with clouds lingering and perhaps some rain chances continuing behind the front in association with a strong upper level low pressure storm system approaching Texas from the west. Temperatures, as a result of the expected clouds, will turn much cooler in the wake of the front.

Have a good Monday….

Updated 915am CT – Friday / 03 February 2017

… Warmer Temperatures By Tomorrow as Warm Front Moves Northward …
… Unsettled Weather Pattern Continues into the Weekend …
… Another Cold Front Due Next Wednesday Afternoon …

On this Friday… a cold front extends westward from the Florida panhandle to around New Orleans then into the northwestern Gulf of Mexico into Mexico just south of Brownsville then northwest into the Texas Big Bend and New Mexico. High pressure, in the wake of the cold front, is centered over the Nebraska/South Dakota border. As a result, our surface winds across south central Texas are north northeasterly.

In the upper levels of the atmosphere.. the wind pattern continues more zonal (generally west to east) with upper level low pressure areas centered east of Hudson Bay and off the west coast of Oregon and Washington. Our upper level winds, at about 18,500 feet overhead, are west northwesterly 20 to 30 mph.

A cold front, that passed south of the area in the predawn hours yesterday, is located over the northwest Gulf of Mexico and northeastern Mexico. The surface wedge of cooler air that has moved into the area is only a little more than 3,000 feet deep with overrunning moisture coming up from the south and over the top of the colder air. By tonight into tomorrow, as the front lifts back northward as a warm front, clouds will continue with a few sprinkles and rain showers developing.

As a result, warmer temperatures will be returning over the weekend into next week with clouds breaking a bit as southerly surface winds increase.

Our next cold front is now not seen until we get into the middle part of next week. Current guidance suggests that the cold front will move through the area by afternoon next Wednesday. There will be a slim chance of rain showers and thunderstorms as the front moves through the area.

Overall, over the next seven days, I expect a generally dry weather pattern with any rainfall to average 1/4 inch or less.

Have a good Friday….
