Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Wednesday / 01 February 2017

… A Weak Cold Front Due Late Tonight into Early Tomorrow …
… A More Unsettled Weather Pattern and Cold Front By Late Week into the Weekend …

On this Wednesday… a weak cold front extends westward from western Tennessee through central Arkansas and southern Oklahoma northwestward across the Texas panhandle into Colorado. A trough.. or line.. of surface low pressure from western north central Texas southwestward into southwest Texas. As a result, our surface winds across south central Texas are south southwesterly.

In the upper levels of the atmosphere.. an upper level low pressure is centered over Hudson Bay with a broad trough, or line, of surface low pressure extending over the eastern 2/3rds of the USA. A ridge, or line, of higher surface pressure extends northward from California northward into the Pacific Northwest. Our upper level winds, at about 18,500 feet overhead, are westerly 10 to 20 mph.

A mostly dry and stable weather pattern continues as we continue through mid week. Enough low level moisture has returned, on the heels of a southerly surface wind, for some patchy fog and low cloudiness in areas along and east of the IH35 corridor on this Wednesday.

The weak cold front north of the area will move into the area between midnight tonight and daybreak tomorrow morning. As it does, some patchy fog and low cloudiness will develop. The real question with this front will be exactly how far south it gets before the front washes out. Updated data suggests that it will get further south than I’ve been thinking the last couple of days. As a result, lingering clouds and cooler temperatures will prevail tomorrow as well as Friday.

The surface based cooler air mass will remain in place Friday into Friday night under a mostly cloudy sky. Winds will return east southeasterly by Friday night with warmer temperatures returning over the weekend into next week with clouds breaking a bit as southerly surface winds increase.

Our next cold front is now not seen until we get into the middle part of next week. Current guidance suggests that the cold front will move through the area next Wednesday during the morning hours. There will be a slim chance of rain showers and thunderstorms as the front moves through the area.

Overall, over the next seven days, I expect a generally dry weather pattern with any rainfall to average 1/10th inch or less.

Have a good Wednesday….
