Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

July 31, 2018

Updated 915am CT – Tuesday / 31 July 2018

… Increased Clouds and Slim Rain Chances Today …
… An Otherwise Dry and Stable Weather Pattern Through the Next Seven Days …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… a southward moving cold front extends west southwestward from northwestern Mississippi into a surface low near Shreveport, LA then continuing southwestward to just south of Austin then westward as a stationary front into far west east of El Paso before turning northward into New Mexico. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds over south central Texas are northerly.

On the upper air map… a broad ridge, or line, of upper air high pressure, acting like a “lid” on the atmosphere, is centered over southern California and the desert southwestern USA. An unseasonably strong area of upper level low pressure area extends southward from Hudson Bay and then over Great Lakes and the eastern half of the USA. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are northwesterly 40 to 45 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

The weak cold front, that has moved through the area in the early morning hours, will continue to move southward and into the Texas coastal plains today as it becomes stationary and starts to wash out. Even with the front through the area, increasing cloud cover and some southeastward moving post frontal rain showers and thunderstorms will affect some areas. I think that rainfall, where it occurs, will average 1/4 inch or less with many areas receiving no rainfall.

Clouds and any precipitation will decrease and end by late in the afternoon today with a return to a more stable air mass once again by tonight through tomorrow into Thursday as the coastal plains stationary front turns into a warm front and passes back northward.

A dry and stable weather pattern will prevail mid through late week through the weekend and even into early next week. Temperatures will rebound a bit with afternoon highs in the mid to upper 90s by the weekend into early next week. No precipitation is seen in the 7 day forecast beyond today.

Have a good Tuesday..

Updated 915am CT – Monday / 30 July 2018

… As We Start the New Week, Temperatures Continue Above Seasonal Averages …
… Cold Front Due with Rain Chances Overnight Tonight into Early Tomorrow …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… a southward moving cold front extends west southwestward from near Memphis, TN into southeastern Arkansas and northwestern Louisiana then westward across north central Texas and then west Texas into New Mexico. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds over south central Texas are southerly.

As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are northwesterly 20 to 25 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

Another warmer than average day is expected today with 100 degree plus temperatures with abundant sunshine.

The cold front, to our north over north central Texas, will continue to move southward and move across the IH35 corridor by daybreak tomorrow morning. Increasing cloud cover and pre frontal rain showers and thunderstorms will start to affect the area by tonight into early tomorrow with the front moving through the area just before or during the morning rush hour tomorrow. At this point, I think that we’ll be seeing upwards of 1/4 inch of rainfall where precipitation occurs (it will not occur everywhere around our area).

Clouds and precipitation will decrease with a return to a more stable air mass once again by late tomorrow into tomorrow night and Wednesday as the front to our south pulls up stationary and washes out.

A dry and stable weather pattern will prevail mid through late week through the weekend and even into early next week. Temperatures will rebound a bit with afternoon highs in the upper 90s to near 100 degrees by early in the next week. No precipitation is seen in the 7 day forecast beyond tomorrow.
