Friday / 10 May 2019 Update….

Austin / Travis County and South Central Texas Weather Update #18
Prepared by UT University/Incident Meteorologist Troy Kimmel
815am CT – Friday / 10 May 2019

… Flash Flood WATCH Continues Until 7pm Saturday …
… Forecast Rainfall Amounts Now Trending Downward …

A shallow wedge of cooler surface air, as predicted, has moved through the area. Aircraft
sounding data, from Austin Bergstrom International Airport, indicates that the wedge of
surface based cooler air is only about 2,700 feet thick with warmer air above.

Upper air low pressure disturbances are still predicted to move overhead.. west to east..
over the next 24 hours with an overrunning pattern, with scattered to numerous rain
showers and a few thunderstorms, expected. Short range high resolution model guidance
now suggests that we’ll remain quiet along the IH35 corridor into midday today before scattered
rain showers and thunderstorms develop this afternoon through tonight and continuing into
tomorrow before rains decrease after noon. Lightning will continue to be a threat with any
thunderstorm activity.

While forecast rainfall amounts are now trending downward (probably averaging about an
inch) over the next 24 hours, the ground is saturated and any additional rainfall could quickly
result in urban and flash flooding. The flash flood WATCH, as issued by NWS Austin-San Antonio,
remains in effect until 7pm tomorrow.

With the arrival of the surface based cooler air, the severe weather threat has decreased over the area.
