Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

… WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY ISSUED… URGENT….

409pm CT – Friday / 27 February 2015

…. URGENT ….

NWS/Austin San Antonio has issued a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY valid now
through 10am Saturday morning for Travis.. Williamson and Hays Counties and counties
westward over the hill country for ice accumulations of up to 1/10th of an inch… This
includes the Austin metro area….

The long and short of it is that the forecast has gone sour. Afternoon high temperatures
did not get as warm as expected.. due to cloud cover.. and with light precipitation now
started, we’re seeing evaporative cooling with temperatures falling back toward freezing
now. It is likely that this may be a problem through the nighttime hours and into the morning
hours on Saturday until temperatures get above freezing (10 to 11am).

The precipitation tonight should be freezing drizzle or very light freezing rain. Icing will
be likely first noticed in areas to the west of the IH35 corridor and on elevated objects and
potentially on elevated roadways and bridges. The ice may be hard to see so everyone
should use caution!!

4pm temps and weather…
Austin Bergstrom…. Cloudy.. 36F (dewpoint 26F)
Austin City (Camp Manry)…. Cloudy/Drizzle… 33F (dewpoint 28F)

Austin / Travis County and South Central Texas Weather Statement #4

… A Few Snow Flakes Possible Over Next Few Hours …
… A Cloudy, Damp, Chilly Weekend Ahead …

At mid morning this morning… a passing upper air disturbance,
which is producing moderate to heavy snow currently in the DFW
area, is moving eastward. It is possible that here.. on the southern
edge of the disturbance.. we could see a few snowflakes mainly in
areas of Williamson and Bell counties to our north.

By later today, as temperatures get a few more degrees above
freezing, the chance of rain will be in the forecast and continue into
much of the weekend with a slow warming trend as an overrunning
pattern persists.

It is possible in the overnight and early morning hours tonight and
tomorrow morning, that freezing rain/drizzle could develop over the
adjacent Texas Hill Country and hilly areas northwest of the IH35
corridor. I expect Austin metro temps to remain slightly above freezing
for the overnight hours which should preclude any problems in the Austin
metro area.

ABIA Interests… please be aware of the deteriorated weather
situation over the DFW/DAL aerodromes. DFW reporting currently
1/2 mile visibility in moderate snow.. DAL reporting 3/4 mile visibility
in light snow. FTW /Fort Worth Meacham reports 1/4 mile visibility
in heavy snow.

Continuing to monitor..
