Austin / Travis County and South Central Texas Weather Update #1
Prepared by UT University/Incident Meteorologist Troy Kimmel
430pm CT – Sunday / 16 June 2019

… Happy Fathers Day …

… Round of Strong Thunderstorms with a Hail and Strong Wind Threat
Later Tonight for the IH35 Corridor …

A moist and increasingly unstable air mass will combine with atmospheric lift associated
with a east southeastward moving middle atmospheric low pressure disturbance later tonight
and will result in a round of strong thunderstorms for the IH35 corridor and Austin metro area.
I am thinking, based on the latest high resolution model data, that the IH35 corridor will be
impacted by this weather in the 9pm to 12 midnight time frame.

In anticipation of this, the NWS/Storm Prediction Center has placed most of our local area in
an “enhanced” severe thunderstorm risk area with large hail and destructive straight line thunderstorm winds possible. There is a risk of a tornado or two, but the risk locally is slightly lower than that of hail and destructive straight line thunderstorm winds.

Rainfall amounts of up to 1 to 2 inches may occur in the area with this cluster of thunderstorms.. this could result in localized flooding of usual suspect areas. The system will be fairly progressive, however, which simply means the storms should move south southeastward through the area pretty quickly.

Once this cluster of thunderstorms moves through the area, scattered rain showers and thunderstorms will continue to affect the area and east of the IH35 corridor through the morning rush hour into mid morning.

I will continue to monitor this severe weather threat,

Thursday / 06 June 2019 Update….

Austin / Travis County and South Central Texas Weather Update #1
Prepared by UT University/Incident Meteorologist Troy Kimmel
820am CT – Thursday / 06 May 2019

…. Round of Thunderstorms Likely This Afternoon ….
…. Hail and Stronger Thunderstorm Winds Possible ….
…. Be Aware of the Lightning Risk with Any Thunderstorms ….

A stronger upper air low pressure disturbance will move northeastward from
southwest Texas by afternoon. Given available atmospheric moisture, atmospheric
instability and and dynamic lift as the disturbance moves by to our northwest, scattered
strong thunderstorms will develop rapidly over the Hill Country by early into mid afternoon
today and sweep east southeastward across the IH35 corridor and into southeast Texas and
the coastal plains by late afternoon.

The NWS/Storm Prediction Center, in their day 1 severe weather outlook (see below), indicates
that the main risk of severe thunderstorms will remain south through southeast of the Austin
metro area. However, I still recommend that you remain “weather aware” today into this evening and listen for the latest information here and from the NWS/Austin-San Antonio.

The time period of concern, along the IH35 corridor, will be in the 1pm to 5pm time frame today. Once the system passes by late afternoon, rain chances will decrease as the thunderstorm
threat diminishes pretty rapidly.

I will continue to monitor this situation,
