Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Monday / 06 August 2018 Update…

Updated 915am CT – Monday / 06 August 2018

… Isolated Afternoon Rain Showers and Thunderstorms Today …
… An Otherwise Dry and Stable Weather Pattern Over the Next Few Days …
… Rain Chances Return to the Forecast by End of Next Week into Next Weekend …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… a stationary front extends westward from southern Iowa to southern Nebraska the into a surface low pressure area in southeastern Colorado. A weak cold front extends westward from that surface low through western Colorado into Utah. Surface high pressure is located to our east over the southeastern USA and the Appalachians. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds over south central Texas are south southeasterly.

On the upper air map… a broad area of eastward expanding upper air high pressure, acting like a “lid” on the atmosphere, is located from Oklahoma westward into Arizona. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are light east northeasterly.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

Other than an isolated rain shower and/or thunderstorm today in association with maximum afternoon heating, a dry and stable weather pattern will prevail into mid week.
Afternoon high temperatures will continue in the upper 90s to near 100 through Wednesday.

As the atmosphere grows more unstable and a disturbance in the Rockies and plains drops southward into Texas by late week into this coming weekend, higher rain and thunderstorm chances return to south central Texas with what appears to be a better chance of getting a good soaking for the area. Lightning risk will possibly be an issue for this event. The latest guidance suggests between 1 to 1 1/2 inch of rainfall over the next seven day period with most of that being Thursday and Friday and beyond into next weekend.

Along with increased cloud coverage and better rain and thunderstorm chances, temperatures will be near to slightly below seasonal averages for late week into the weekend.

Have a good Monday..

Friday / 03 August 2018 Update….

Updated 915am CT – Friday / 03 August 2018

… A Dry and Stable Weather Pattern Continues Through Most of Next Week …
… Rain Chances Return to the Forecast by End of Next Week …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… a weakening stationary front extends westward from Georgia and Alabama southwestward through central Mississippi into Louisiana and then westward, as a weak northward moving warm front, to along the Texas coast and onshore into south central Texas. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds over south central Texas are light southerly.

On the upper air map… a broad area of eastward expanding upper air high pressure, acting like a “lid” on the atmosphere, is centered over the southwestern USA. An unseasonably strong area of upper level low pressure area extends southward from Hudson Bay and then over Great Lakes and the eastern half of the USA into the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are north northeasterly 10 to 20 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

The weak stationary front, that moved through the area as a cold front earlier in the week, will continue to move northward through the area today as a weak warm front.

A dry and stable weather pattern will prevail mid through late week through the weekend and even into early next week. Afternoon high temperatures will continue in the upper 90s to near 100 through next week.

Slim rain chances return to the forecast by the end of next week.

Have a good Friday..
