Austin / Travis County and South Central Texas Weather Update #2
Prepared by UT University/Incident Meteorologist Troy Kimmel
720am CT – Friday / 06 January 2017
.. Some Light Icing Reported in Areas South and East of the Austin Metro Area ..
As expected.. some very light precipitation has developed in areas southeast of the
Austin metro/IH35 corridor. The very light bands of rain.. oriented southwest to northeast..
are moving northeastward so the bands DO NOT appear to show any northwestward movement
at this time so things are looking OK for the Austin metro.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDot) report some road treatments are ongoing in
parts of Bastrop and Lee Counties as some icing has been reported on bridges and overpasses.
Icing has been reported in the San Antonio metro area as well. In most areas, the surface
temperatures are still well above freezing so icing has not been reported on surface based
roadways.
The upper air low pressure disturbance.. moving west to east to our distant north.. will pass
northeast of the area by later this afternoon into this evening. As that occurs, any precipitation to
our southeast will end and skies will partially clear.
Expect a hard freeze in most areas tonight as well as Saturday (tomorrow) night with lows in most
areas between 23 and 27 degrees.
