Austin / Travis County and South Central Texas Weather Update #5 – FINAL UPDATE
Prepared by UT University/Incident Meteorologist Troy Kimmel
1030am CT – Sunday / 08 January 2017

.. This Morning’s Low Temperatures .. No Records (My Error in Yesterday’s Update) ..

At KAUS/Austin Bergstrom International Airport, the official morning low today was 16F at 340am..
at KATT/ Austin City Camp Mabry (ANG), the official low was 21F at 659am. Please note that I
made an error
in transcribing the records in yesterday’s update (Austin Bergstrom International
Airport record low for today
was 13F on 08Jan2010) so neither of this morning’s lows were
records; it has been colder on this date
.

At AGHT2/Austin Great Hills NWS COOP weather station in northwest Austin, I recorded
a low this morning of 17.7F recorded at 713am CT.

The LCRA Hydromet recorded lows in our IH35 corridor counties as low as… 12F at
Jonestown and Driftwood.. 13F at Oak Hill, Florence, Lago Vista, Dripping Springs, Elgin,
Jollyville, and Rosanky.

FAA Airport AWOS weather observing platforms reported San Marcos with a low of 16F and
Georgetown with a low of 18F.

For official morning lows, here is a link to a public information statement (PNS) product,
courtesy of NWS/Austin-San Antonio, with a county-by-county rundown (various sources, NWS,
FAA, CoCoRahS)…

… A Warming Trend Underway Beginning Today into the New Week …

After the very hard freeze in most areas again overnight, with plenty of sunshine, light surface winds
at the sunrise will shift back southerly at 5 to 10 mph today and the warming trend will begin with
highs back in the 40s to near 50 in a few locations. This warming trend will continue into the new week.

This is my final update on this weather situation..

Austin / Travis County and South Central Texas Weather Update #4
Prepared by UT University/Incident Meteorologist Troy Kimmel
1055am CT – Saturday / 07 January 2017

.. This Morning’s Low Temperatures ..

At KAUS/Austin Bergstrom International Airport, the official morning low today was 20F.. at
KATT/ Austin City Camp Mabry (ANG), the official low was 19F. Neither were records; it
has been colder on this date. It also does not appear that the record “low” highs are
threatened today… the coldest high temperature at KAUS for 07Jan is 31F recorded on
07Jan1968… and the coldest high temperature at KATT is 27F back on 07Jan1913. We
should be warmer that that today in both cases.

At AGHT2/Austin Great Hills NWS COOP weather station in northwest Austin, I recorded
a low this morning of 16.2F recorded at 712am CT.

The LCRA Hydromet recorded lows in our IH35 corridor counties as low as… 12F at Lago
Vista.. 13F at Jonestown, Florence, and Pedernales State Falls.. 14F at Lakeway.

For official morning lows, here is a link to a public information statement (PNS) product,

… Another Cold Night Ahead … Remember the Pets, Pipes, Plants and, of Course, People …

After highs in the 30s today, with sunset, under a clear sky, I expect a rapid drop in temperatures
once again. While lows will be at or maybe a degree warmer than they were last night, please
understand that I expect some locations, especially those along and east of the IH35 corridor,
to actually be colder than last night. In short, make preparations now for another very hard freeze
tonight area wide.

Both of the records at our first order climate sites are threatened for tomorrow morning with
Austin Bergstrom International Airport, in my opinion, most threatened with Camp Mabry less so..
KAUS/Austin Bergstrom International Airport… 19F back on 08Jan1996
KATT/Austin City Camp Mabry (ANG)… 16F back on 08Jan1912

By tomorrow, with plenty of sunshine, light surface winds at sunrise will shift back southerly at 5 to
10 mph and the warming trend will begin with highs back in the 40s to near 50 in a few locations.

Stay warm… I’ll continue to monitor..
