Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Wednesday / 24 October 2018 Update….

Updated 915am CT – Wednesday / 24 October 2018

… Rain Chances and Below Average Temperatures Continue Today …
… Sunshine Returns Tomorrow Through the Weekend into Next Week …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… a stationary front extends westward from the south central Gulf of Mexico into the western Gulf where it becomes a warm front and continues into a persistent surface low pressure area over the northwestern Gulf of Mexico east of Corpus Christi and Brownsville. A surface high is situated over the Great Lakes states.
As a result of this surface weather pattern, the surface winds are northeasterly.

On the upper air map… a trough, or line, of upper level low pressure is located from east of Hudson Bay to over the eastern third of the USA. Another upper level is over New Mexico. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are west southwesterly around 40 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

Cooler surface based air.. only several thousand feet thick.. is being overridden by low, mid and upper level moisture resulting in a cloudy weather pattern over our area. The stronger upper air over New Mexico, as it moves eastward, will result in rain chances today into tonight before the system moves east of the area by late tonight.

NWS/Weather Prediction Center rainfall guidance has trended downward over the last 24 hours and now suggests an average of 1 to 1 1/2 inches of rain for our local area over the next 18 hours with heavier totals possible especially to the south and southeast of the area as well as some areas to the north.

With clouds in place, temperatures will continue to be below seasonal averages today.

A drier and more stable weather pattern with sunshine and warmer temperatures expected tomorrow through Saturday before another dry cold front passes, with only a wind shift, late Saturday night into Sunday. Temperatures will cool a bit, with the sunshine continuing, for Sunday into the first few days of next week.

Have a good Wednesday..
