A strong upper level low pressure and associated surface cold front will move across the
area late today through tonight. Guidance has slowed down the start of the event slightly
as evidenced by the later start time in the headlines above. Even so, as the system moves
into an increasingly moist and unstable air mass, it will produce dynamic atmospheric lift
which will result in the rapid development of thunderstorms over the hill country by about
the dinner hour this evening. These thunderstorms will then form into a line and will sweep
eastward across our area later tonight into the post-midnight hours with an associated large
hail and damaging straight line thunderstorm wind risk. In addition, there may be a tornado
or two primarily in areas north of Austin.

Once the cold front moves through the area in the hours before sunrise tomorrow morning, the
severe weather risk will decrease.

Please increase your weather awareness today into tonight and, in addition, have multiple
sources of weather information. Make sure your NWS All Hazards Weather Radios are
turned on and properly reset so that you’re set to automatically receive any
National Weather Service (NWS) Austin-San Antonio watches/advisories/warnings.
Please stay in contact with the NWS/Austin-San Antonio at www.weather.gov/ewx .

It is VERY IMPORTANT that you know the difference between the NWS terms…
watch.. advisory and warning ..
so please look over this infographic, prepared by The University of Texas….
