Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Tuesday / 16 October 2018 Update….

Updated 915am CT – Tuesday / 16 October 2018

… Little Change with Clouds and Rain Continue in an Overrunning Pattern …
… Below Average Temperatures Continue for the Seven Day Period Ahead …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… a strong cold front extends southward from a surface low over the Carolinas southwestward to the northwest Florida panhandle coast into the northwest Gulf of Mexico then southwestward into Mexico. High pressure, north of the front, is centered over Oklahoma into Colorado. As a result of this surface weather pattern, in the wake of the cold front overnight, our surface winds over south central Texas are northerly.

On the upper air map… a slowly eastward moving deep broad trough, or line, of upper level low pressure is located from Hudson Bay southwestward into southwestern USA and northwestern Mexico. Within this trough, a deep area of upper level low pressure is located over southwestern Arizona. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are south southwesterly around 40 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

Our much cooler surface air.. only several thousand feet thick.. is being overridden by low and mid level moisture resulting in a chilly, cloudy and wet (overrunning) weather pattern persisting through the weekend before a drier weather pattern develops by early next week.

Temperatures will continue to be below seasonal averages.

NWS/Weather Prediction Center guidance suggests an average of 2 inches of rain for our local area over the next seven day period with isolated heavier totals possible.

Have a good Tuesday..
