TK’s Weather Discussion (Fri/14Sep2012)

Updated 130pm CDT Friday / 14 September 2012

… Rain Chances Continue …
… Rain Chances Diminish as Sun Returns by Sunday and Monday …
… Another Cold Front Next Tuesday …

On this Friday… a cold front extends from a low pressure area north of Shreveport southward to just off the Texas coast. High pressure.. behind the front.. is located from southern Iowa southwestward to eastern Colorado and western Kansas. As a result of this surface pattern, with the cold front well southeast of the area, a north northwesterly surface wind is prevailing across our area.

In the upper levels of the atmosphere, a trough. or line.. of upper air low pressure continues to move slowly eastward along a line from the Great Lakes states southwestward into west Texas and southern New Mexico. As a result of this upper air wind flow, the upper level winds continue to be southwesterly.

The surface cold front has now moved through the area and is along the Texas coast. Meanwhile, the upper air trough.. or line.. of upper air low pressure is lagging behind the front with our clouds and rain chances are expected to linger more into the weekend with those rain chances lasting into Sunday.

This continues to generally be an extended wet event. Scattered to numerous rain showers and thunderstorms will continue through tomorrow and tomorrow night into Sunday. NWS rainfall guidance is most recently suggesting that an additional 1 to 2″ of rain could fall across our area. In general, given the on going drought conditions, this rainfall will be very beneficial and will not create any major problems.

As rain chances diminish and clouds break by Sunday afternoon, southerly surface winds will return quickly to the area.

Another cold front will affect the area by next Tuesday midday into afternoon with another slim chance of rain showers and thunderstorms. Drier air and a little cooler temperatures will follow the passage of the front.

For Austin and south central Texas… tonight will see a cloudy sky with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms with lows in the 60s with a northerly wind. For tomorrow, a cloudy sky with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms with highs around 80 with a northerly wind.

Have a good Friday night and Saturday…
