Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

TK’s Special Briefing….

955pm CT – Mon/3Mar2014

….. First a note regarding the difference in sleet and hail (which we may need to know
before the nights’ out…)

Sleet are essentially frozen rain drops falling through a more substantial layer of freezing
air aloft. In general, is 2/10ths of an inch or smaller.

Hail, on the other hand, is related to convection (thunderstorms) and is generally larger
than 2/10ths of an inch.. certainly anything larger than 1/4 inch is going to be hail.. especially
if you have signs of convection (lightning and thunder). Just as you can have thunderstorms
with surface colder air, you can have hail as well.
