Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Monday / 29 October 2018 Update….

Updated 915am CT – Monday / 29 October 2018

… Sunshine to Start the New Week …
… Rain and Thunderstorm Chances Mid Week with a Cold Front …
… Sunshine and Cooler Temperatures Late Week Through the Weekend …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… a weakening cold front extends westward from central Georgia to along the Arkansas/Louisiana border where it turns to a stationary front and extends west then northwestward through the Texas panhandle and into a surface low over southeastern Colorado. A surface high, north of the front, is located over west Tennessee and northern Mississippi with another surface high, south of the front, over the Gulf of Mexico. As a result of this surface weather pattern, the surface winds are light and variable or light south southwesterly.

On the upper air map… a trough, or line, of upper level low pressure is located from south and east of Hudson Bay southward through the eastern third of the USA. Another trough is situated from Alberta south southwestward over the western third of the USA. An upper level high is located over northern Mexico. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are northwesterly around 30 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

Sunshine will continue through tomorrow as southerly winds pick up across the area.

The upper level low pressure trough, to our distant northwest, will move eastward into the central plains as it deepens through the middle part of the week. As the upper level trough moves overhead of our area Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday evening, a surface cold front will surge southeastward on the backside of the upper air trough and move through the area between 6pm to 12 midnight Wednesday. Rain showers and thunderstorms will increase locally in advance of the front Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday evening with upwards of 1/2 inch of rain possible. Some stronger thunderstorms with some hail and stronger thunderstorm wind gusts are possible especially in areas east of the IH35 corridor. Precipitation will shut off quickly with the passage of the front with clouds moving east of the area after midnight Wednesday night.

Cooler temperatures.. a bit below average.. will prevail over the area with abundant sunshine Thursday into the weekend.

Have a good Monday..
