Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Monday / 22 October 2018 Update….

Updated 915am CT – Monday / 22 October 2018

… Rain Chances Return as Clouds Thicken …
… Below Average Temperatures Continue as Well …
… Sunshine Returns Late Week into the Weekend …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… a stationary front extends westward from the southwestern North Atlantic through the Florida straits into a surface low east of Brownsville. A southeastward moving cold front is situated from the Great Lakes into southern Iowa to along the Kansas/Nebraska state line and then northwestward into Wyoming and Montana. Surface high pressure extends from West Virginia into West Tennessee and north Mississippi and into south central Texas. As a result of this surface weather pattern, the surface winds are light and variable.

On the upper air map… a trough, or line, of upper level low pressure is located from east of Hudson Bay to over the eastern third of the USA. A strong upper level low is located over Nevada and California. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are southwesterly 50 to 55 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

After a day of sunshine yesterday, clouds are thickening and lowering as the upper level low pressure area out west moves eastward. Once again, the cooler surface based air.. only several thousand feet thick.. is being overridden by low, mid and high level moisture resulting in a cloudy weather pattern. Passing upper air disturbances, being ejected by the counterclockwise rotating upper level low, will result in rain chances over the next two or three days before the system moves east of the area and a drier weather pattern develops by late in the week and through next weekend.

With clouds in place, temperatures will continue to be below seasonal averages.

NWS/Weather Prediction Center guidance suggests an average of 1 to 3 inches of rain for our local area over the next seven day period with isolated heavier totals possible especially to the south through southwest of the area.

Have a good Monday..
