Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Friday / 21 September 2018 Update….

Updated 915am CT – Friday / 21 September 2018

… One to Three Inches of Rain, On Average, over the Next Seven Days …
… Series of Cold Fronts Moving Into Texas for Latter Part of Next Week …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… high pressure is over the eastern USA seaboard into the southeastern USA. A cold front extends southward from a surface low pressure area over the northern Great Lakes into central Missouri and into northern Oklahoma where it becomes a stationary front and continues into west Texas and southern New Mexico. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds over south central Texas are south southeasterly.

On the upper air map… a trough, or line, of upper level low pressure is moving slowly eastward from Hudson Bay in Canada southward into the western Great Lakes. Upper air high pressure, acting like a “lid” on the atmosphere, is centered over the southeastern USA. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are light westerly.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

Gulf moisture continues to move ashore of the Texas coast as the upper level trough, or line, of low pressure over the north central USA moves eastward. By tomorrow, the weakening cold front to our north will move southeastward from north Texas into central areas of the state as it washes out. All of this will combine to continue to produce clouds as well as much better rain chances continuing through the weekend. The latest guidance suggests the possibility of some heavier rain at times over the weekend.

Rain chances now are likely to continue on and off through most of next week as a series of cold front moves into Texas. Guidance is now suggesting than these fronts will likely have a tough time progressing very far southward in the state and this will result in rain shower and thunderstorm chances continuing.

NWS/Weather Prediction Center estimates that we’ll see 1 to 3 inches of rain during the next seven day period with isolated heavier totals.

Have a good Friday..
