Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Thursday / 29 March 2018

… Patchy Fog and Low Clouds This Morning …
… A More Stable, Less Humid Weather Pattern Returns …
… Another Cold Front and Limited Rain Chances Late Sunday …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… a series of surface cold fronts that extend southwestward from the Mississippi Valley and the Great Lakes states into Texas. The strongest front is located from northwest Arkansas southwestward into northwest Texas and the southern South Plains into northeastern New Mexico. High pressure is located well east of our area over the southwestern north Atlantic Ocean. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds are southerly.

On the upper air map… an eastward moving deep low pressure trough, or a “line” of low pressure, extends southward from Canada into the central USA. As result of the upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are southwesterly 95 to 105 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

As the axis of the trough of upper level area of low pressure moves east of the area in the next few hours, we’ll see the return of sunshine and a drier and more stable air mass. A surface cold front will move swiftly through the area by tonight, temperatures will drop back a few degrees tomorrow into tomorrow night.

Another stronger cold front will approach the area by late Sunday night into early Monday. Rain chances look minimal as this system moves through with some lingering clouds in the wake of the front along with a little cooler temperatures.

Have a good Thursday..

Austin / Travis County and South Central Texas Weather Update #4  (Last Update)
Prepared by UT University/Incident Meteorologist Troy Kimmel
230pm CT – Wednesday / 28 March 2018

.. Rain Chances Decrease Into Tonight As Upper Level Low Completes Its Move Across Texas ..
.. NWS Austin-San Antonio Issued Flash Flood Watch Continues Until 7pm …

At mid afternoon.. the complex of rain showers and thunderstorms.. that moved through our
area in the late morning into midday time period.. has now moved east of the area and extends
from northeast Texas and the ArkLaTex southwestward to west of Victoria and the middle Texas
coastal plains. It continues to move eastward.

We still need to be watching for some additional rain shower and even isolated thunderstorm development
since we still have about 12 hours until the upper level trough actually crosses overhead and moves east of the area.
However, being in the rain cooled more stable surface air, I feel like the severe thunderstorm risk as well
as the heavier rain risk has ended locally. As a result, this will be my last statement on this weather event.

At our first order climate and airport weather stations in the IH35 corridor areas since midnight…
Austin Bergstrom International Airport…. 5.83″ (breaks previous daily rainfall record of 1.86″ on this date back in 2006)
Austin City / Camp Mabry ANG… 3.20″ (record for today is 3.26″ back on this date in 2006 – not broken at this point)
Austin Executive Airport / East of Toll Road in Pflugerville… 3.66″
Georgetown Municipal Airport…. 2.23″
San Marcos Regional Airport…. 3.40″
Lago Vista Rusty Allen Airport…. 1.61″
