Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Wednesday / 26 September 2018 Update….

Updated 915am CT – Wednesday / 26 September 2018

… A Cold Front with Scattered Rain and Thunderstorms Today …
… A Little Cooler Temperatures In the Wake of the Front …
… Warmer with Lower Rain Chances Lingering Late Week Through the Weekend …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… A cold front extends south southwestward from the eastern Great Lakes across the Missouri bootheel into a surface low over southwestern Arkansas then continuing into northeast Texas then southwest Texas south of El Paso. Surface high pressure, behind the front, is located over northwestern Wyoming and Nebraska. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds over south central Texas are light southerly.

On the upper air map… a deep trough, or line, of upper level low pressure is moving slowly eastward from over Hudson Bay in Canada southward into the plains and northern Mexico. Upper air high pressure, acting like a “lid” on the atmosphere, is centered over the southeastern USA and western Atlantic Ocean. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are westerly 20 to 25 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

As the upper level low pressure trough, over the plains states, moves eastward through the plains states toward the Mississippi Valley, it will allow for the surface cold front to our northwest to progress south southeastward through Texas. The front will arrive in the Austin and IH35 corridor by midday today with scattered to numerous rain showers and thunderstorms expected. Temperatures will cool a bit. The front will wash out in the coastal plains to our southeast by late tomorrow night into Friday with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms expected to linger over our area.

As the front washes out, I’ll be keeping a partly to mostly cloudy sky with rain chances and warmer temperatures lingering over the area late week through our upcoming weekend and into next week.

NWS/Weather Prediction Center estimates that we’ll see, on average, around 1 inch of rain during the next seven day period with isolated heavier totals.

Have a good Wednesday..
