Austin / Travis County and South Central Texas Weather Statement #1
Prepared by UT University/Incident Meteorologist Troy Kimmel
900am CT – Friday / 20 January 2017
.. Strong/High Gradient Wind Event for Sunday into Monday ..
A strong upper level low pressure and an associated surface low/surface cold front will
across the area tomorrow night through Sunday. Although one or two rain showers may
develop ahead of the front tomorrow evening, the big weather event locally will be the
strong northwesterly winds in the wake of the cold front (under a mostly clear sky) after
midnight tomorrow night through the day Sunday into Sunday night.
Sustained northwesterly winds of 30 to 40 mph with some gusts possible into the 40
to 50 mph range. This will result in objects being blown around so it would be a good
idea to secure loose items before sunset Saturday night.
In addition, given the dormant vegetation (given the recent hard freezes) and that
vegetation becoming increasing dry today and tomorrow, I expect that wildfire danger
will be high on Sunday as well.
Winds will slowly diminish by Sunday night into Monday.
