Austin / Travis County and South Central Texas Weather Update #3
Prepared by UT University/Incident Meteorologist Troy Kimmel
600pm CT – Friday / 06 January 2017
.. Clearing Skies Across the Austin Metro and IH35 Corridor ..
.. A Very Hard Freeze In Store Tonight and Again Tomorrow Night ..
.. Remember, Pets, Pipes, Plants and People .. Make Preparations Now ..
As expected.. our skies are clearing rapidly from northwest to southeast across the IH35
corridor. With the clouds dissipating, the Sun having set and the winds decreasing, this leaves
little in the way of atmospheric “insulation.” What little amount of surface heating we saw today
will quickly escape into the evening hours.
With the arctic air mass in place under a clear sky, overnight low temperatures across our area
tonight will fall into the mid and upper teens in outlying low lying areas (mainly west of the IH35
corridor) to 18 to 23 degree range over the rest of the IH35 corridor area with the exception
of the downtown Austin area where lows temperatures will be in the 24 to 27 degrees.
Afternoon highs tomorrow with sunshine will rise only into the 30s.
I expect about the same lows for tomorrow night as tonight. Expect another very hard freeze
across the area.
Sunday’s highs will warm back into the 40s with sunshine.
Bottom line.. make preparations now for a very hard freeze in most areas tonight as well as
tomorrow night.
Keep in mind the pets, pipes, plants and, of course, people.
I’m continuing to monitor…
