Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Austin / Travis County and South Central Texas Weather Update #1
Prepared by UT University/Incident Meteorologist Troy Kimmel

… Potential Severe Weather / Flood Event in the Coming Days …

With an increasingly moist and unstable air mass in place across the area, a series of upper
level low pressure disturbances from the Pacific combined with a southeastward moving cold
front will result in scattered to numerous rain showers and thunderstorms over the coming
days with storms potentially severe with isolated tornadoes, larger hail and damaging thunderstorm
winds tomorrow into tomorrow night and a threat of heavier rain and potential flood problems
beginning tomorrow and continuing through the balance of the week and into the upcoming
weekend.

NWS/Storm Prediction Center outlook for tomorrow has Austin and the northern part of south
central Texas in an “enhanced” risk of severe thunderstorms with the remaining southern parts
of the area in a “slight” risk…

The main risks will be a few tornadoes (mainly in areas from the Austin area northeastward into
northeast Texas), along with larger hail and damaging straight line thunderstorm winds.

Rainfall will be heavy over the area over beginning tomorrow and continuing through the end of the
week into the weekend. On average, over the next seven days, I expect that we’ll see an average of 3 to 5
inches of rain with isolated totals to 6 to 7 inches especially in areas east of the IH35 corridor. If this
materializes, we’ll see flood related problems develop rather quickly especially in areas were we’ve
seen heavier rain so far this spring.

Bottom line.. I encourage everyone to be weather aware over the coming days. Know, in advance, the
difference between a NWS issued WATCH, ADVISORY and WARNING.

Always have at least two methods of getting weather information..

when NWS watches and warnings are issued ..
.. make sure the WEA alerts are activated in your settings on your smart phone ..
.. go to the NWS Austin-San Antonio website at weather.gov/ewx ..
.. go to http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/cgi-bin/afos/retrieve.py?pil=warewx&limit=20&fmt=html
for a chronological text listing (most current at the top but note the page doesn’t auto-refresh, you
must refresh page manually) of NWS Austin-San Antonio watches, advisories and warnings..
