Wednesday / 05 September 2018 Update….

Updated 915am CT – Wednesday / 05 September 2018

… Rain Chances Continue On and Off Over the Next Seven Days …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… the remnants of tropical cyclone Gordon is over central Mississippi east of Jackson MS. A cold front extends southwestward from eastern Nebraska and Kansas into the Oklahoma/Texas panhandles then west northwestward into Colorado. A trough, or line, of surface low pressure extends from the Texas panhandle into New Mexico and far west Texas near El Paso. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds over south central Texas are light northeasterly.

On the upper air map… a broad trough of upper level low pressure extends southwestward from central and western Canada to over the western half of the USA. Upper air high pressure, acting like a “lid” on the atmosphere, continues over the Appalachians. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are light north northeasterly less than 10 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

The upper level high pressure.. or the “lid” on the atmosphere that has been present over Texas this summer.. has weakened overhead and moved more over the eastern USA as moist unstable air spreads into the area off the Gulf of Mexico.

As a result, a moist and unstable air mass will, over the next seven day period, produce scattered on-and-off rain shower and thunderstorm activity. Some gusty winds and, of course, dangerous cloud to ground lightning will accompany the stronger thunderstorms. NWS/Weather Prediction Center rainfall guidance suggests that we’ll see, on average, 1 to 3 inches of rain between and next Monday.

As the result of cloud cover and areas of precipitation, afternoon high temperatures will be, for the first time in a while, closer to seasonal averages.

Have a good Wednesday..
