Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Wednesday / 22 August 2018 Update….

Updated 915am CT – Wednesday / 22 August 2018

… Slim Thunderstorm Chances Today ..
… Otherwise, A Dry and Stable Summertime Weather Pattern Continues …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… a low pressure area is over eastern New Mexico with a warm front extending east southeastward to over the Permian Basin and the San Angelo area to overhead of the Austin/south central Texas area then into southeast Texas where it turns into a cold front and extends eastward off the Louisiana coast back into the Florida panhandle and into a surface low in northeastern Georgia. North of the front, surface high pressure is located over the central and northern plains states. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds over south central Texas are light southerly.

On the upper air map… a trough, or line, of upper level low pressure area extends southward from the Great Lakes into the Tennessee Valley with another southwest-to-northeast oriented trough of low pressure over the Pacific northwestern USA. General upper air high pressure, acting like a “lid” on the atmosphere, continues over the southern USA with the main upper level high pressure center over west Texas and New Mexico. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are easterly about 15 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

I’ve updated my forecast to include a slim thunderstorm chance today as intense surface heating combines with available low level moisture, instability and the weak warm front drifting back northeastward over the area. Any thunderstorms that do develop today will contain dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning as well as strong straightline (downdraft) winds. The threat of precipitation will end after sunset this evening. Any rainfall will generally average 1/4 inch or less.

Upper level high pressure will restrengthen overhead for the remainder of the week through next weekend and early next week with a dry and stable late summer weather pattern continuing.

Afternoon high temperatures will continue to be well above seasonal averages.

Other than slim chances today, no rainfall is expected over the next seven days.

Have a good Wednesday..
