Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Friday/10 August 2018 Update….

Updated 915am CT – Friday / 10 August 2018

… Rain Chances Continue For Late Week into the Weekend …
… A Dry and More Stable Weather Pattern for Much of Next Week …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… a weak stationary front extends west southwestward from western Kentucky and the Missouri bootheel into central Arkansas into a weak surface low pressure area over north central Texas then continuing into far west Texas near El Paso. Surface high pressure is located to our east over the southeastern USA with another high north of the front over the Rockies. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds over south central Texas are southerly.

On the upper air map… an upper level low pressure area extends southward from Hudson Bay into the eastern half of the USA as upper level high pressure settles back westward over Nevada and Utah. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are northwesterly 10 to 20 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

Our atmosphere is growing more unstable as an upper disturbance in the Rockies and plains drops southward into Texas over the next couple of days. Combining with the weak surface front, to our north, along with available moisture will result in scattered to numerous rain showers and thunderstorms for the Austin metro area and the IH35 corridor and especially in areas to our west and northwest. Heaviest and most widespread rains in the hill country areas could produce 4 to 6 inch rainfall amounts while rainfall will average around 1 inch in the Austin metro area and the IH35 corridor between now and Monday. The lightning risk will be an issue where ever thunderstorms develop. Persons with outdoor plans today and through the weekend should be “weather aware” and be ready to seek safe shelter if thunderstorms approach or if they develop overhead.

Along with increased cloud coverage and the reduced rain and thunderstorm chances, temperatures will be near or even slightly below seasonal averages for the weekend.

A drier and more stable weather develops once again, with rain chances dropping from the forecast, beginning Monday and continuing for much of next week.

Have a good Friday..
