Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

July 20, 2018

Updated 915am CT – Friday / 20 July 2018

… Afternoon High Temperatures Continue to Rise …
… NWS Issued Excessive Heat Warning Through the Weekend …
… Saharan Dust Comes and Goes …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… surface high pressure is located to our east over the eastern USA with another high pressure area over northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Between the two high pressure areas, a trough, or line, of surface low pressure extends southward from a surface low over the Kansas/Oklahoma border into south and west Texas around Del Rio. A warm front is lifting north northeastward from the Oklahoma/Kansas surface low to northeastern Arkansas.. northeastern Mississippi.. into southern Alabama and southern Georgia. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds over south central Texas are south southwesterly.

On the upper air map… a broad ridge, or line, of upper air high pressure, acting like a “lid” on the atmosphere, extends across the southern USA. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are northeasterly less than 15 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

Upper level high pressure will be holding strong overhead. This keeps the “lid” on the atmosphere which means rain chances are out of the forecast and temperatures remain above to well above average seasonal averages over the next seven days.

Several new batches of Saharan dust will be moving into our area over the coming days as well.

Have a good Friday..
