Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Thursday / 24 May 2018

… A Dry Seven Day Forecast Ahead …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… surface high pressure is well to the east of the area. A low pressure area over southeastern Colorado with a trough, or line, of surface low pressure extending southwestward through New Mexico. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds over south central Texas are light and variable or light southerly.

On the upper air map… a trough, or line, of upper air low pressure extends southward from western Canada over the eastern Pacific Ocean and western USA with a strong northeastward moving upper level low pressure disturbance embedded over southern and southwestern Canada. Upper level high pressure is building slowly northeastward out of Mexico into Texas and the southern US plains. As a result of the upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are westerly about 20 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

The dry weather pattern continues for today with this stable summer like weather pattern to prevail through the remainder of the week and through the upcoming long Memorial Day weekend and into most of next week.

Guidance strongly suggests that afternoon highs will rise into the mid and upper 90s to near 100 by the holiday weekend as upper level high pressure builds northeastward into the area and establishes a “lid” on the atmosphere.

I continue to watch a weak area of low pressure that is expected to move north northwestward from the western Caribbean Sea and the eastern Yucatan peninsula into the central and eastern Gulf of Mexico later today into tonight. Conditions appear to be quite favorable for development of a tropical depression or tropical storm as the system moves northward through the central and eastern Gulf of Mexico. Atmospheric models are in general agreement in suggesting the potential landfall of this system over the upcoming holiday weekend somewhere between the mouth of the Mississippi River and the western coast of Florida. In any case, the system stays well east of our local area with little/no effect expected.

Based upon the latest NWS/Weather Prediction Center guidance, no rainfall is expected over the next seven days for the local area.

Have a good Thursday..
