Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Wednesday / 23 May 2018

… A Dry Seven Day Forecast Ahead …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… surface high pressure is well to the east of the area. A low pressure area over southeastern Colorado with a trough, or line, of surface low pressure extending southward through eastern New Mexico and far west Texas. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds over south central Texas are light and variable or light southerly.

On the upper air map… a trough, or line, of upper air low pressure extends southward from western Canada into the western USA with a strong upper level low pressure disturbance embedded over southeastern Idaho. As a result of the upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are northwesterly less than 15 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

The dry weather pattern continues for today with rain chances very minimal and in areas generally well east of the IH35 corridor. This stable summer like weather pattern will prevail through the remainder of the week and through the upcoming long Memorial Day weekend.

Guidance strongly suggests that afternoon highs will rise into the mid and upper 90s
by the holiday weekend as upper level high pressure establishes a “lid” on the atmosphere.

I continue to watch a weak area of low pressure that is expected to move north northwestward from the western Caribbean Sea and the eastern Yucatan peninsula into the central and eastern Gulf of Mexico by late week. Atmospheric models are in general agreement in suggesting the eastern Gulf and the Florida coast for potential landfall of perhaps a tropical depression or weak tropical storm over the upcoming holiday weekend. In any case, the system stays well east of our local area with little/no effect expected.

Based upon the latest NWS/Weather Prediction Center guidance, forecast rainfall amounts, over the next seven days, for south central Texas will likely be trace amounts or less (in other words, no rainfall expected!!).

Have a good Wednesday..
