Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Monday / 09 April 2018

… Clouds For the Beginning and the End of the New Week …
… Weak Cold Front Due Tonight with a Stronger Cold Front Friday Night …
… Rain and Thunderstorm Chances Late Thursday into Friday and Friday Night …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… a stationary front extends is over the northwestern Gulf of Mexico into northeastern Mexico. Surface low pressure is over northwestern Missouri with a cold front extending westward through Kansas then northwestward into Wyoming and Montana. High pressure is over the USA and Canadian Border west of the Great Lakes. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds are northeasterly.

On the upper air map… a trough, or line, of upper level low pressure extends southward from Hudson Bay over the eastern 2/3rds of the USA. A ridge, or line, of high pressure extends northward along the USA west coast. As result of the upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are westerly 55 to 60 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

Low level clouds have developed in the overnight hours and persist into the morning hours as we start the new week.

A weak reinforcing cold front will move southeastward through the area late tonight with skies partially clearing by the morning rush hour tomorrow.

I expect plenty of sunshine with warming temperatures tomorrow through Wednesday and Thursday.

By late week, a well developed upper level low pressure storm system and associated cold front will cross Texas with increased rain and thunderstorm chances. We’ll see the rain chances return to the forecast by late Thursday night and then peak Friday into Friday night as the system passes.

Abundant sunshine with cooler temperatures will prevail for our upcoming weekend.

Over the next seven days, NWS/Weather Prediction Center guidance suggests rainfall locally will average 1/4 inch. The NWS/Storm Prediction Center has outlooked areas to our northeast over northeast Texas and the overall ArkLaTex region for the possibility of severe thunderstorms Friday into Friday night.

Have a good Monday..
