Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Tuesday / 30 January 2018

… Warmer Temperatures Next Few Days …
… Another Cold Front Moves Through Texas Late Thursday …
… Clouds Increase Late Week into the Weekend.. Holding Off on Rain Chances…
… Another Cold Front Due on Sunday …

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… surface high pressure is centered in an area from the western Great Lakes southward into Arkansas and east Texas. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds are light and variable.

On the upper air map… a trough, or line, of upper air low pressure area extends southward from east of Hudson Bay to along the USA eastern seaboard. A rather zonal (west-to-east) wind pattern covers the western 2/3rds of the USA. As a result of the upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are westerly 30 to 40 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

Another day of abundant sunshine is expected today. As the surface high, to our east, moves eastward, we’ll see a return to a southerly surface wind by later today into tonight.

Low level moisture will increase later tonight into tomorrow with more in the way of cloud cover expected especially by tomorrow night into Thursday.

Another cold front slips south southeastward through Texas by late Thursday afternoon. Limited low level moisture and atmospheric instability and a rather stable air mass in advance of the front will preclude any rain chances at this point.

As cooler air settles southward over the area Thursday night into Friday and the weekend, a series of upper air low pressure disturbances will move overhead with increasing clouds. At this point, given the widely divergent computer model guidance and overall low precipitation probability, I will hold off of rain chances at this point.

A second cold front will move into Texas and across the local area by late afternoon into the evening hours Sunday. Clearing skies and cooler temperatures will prevail for the first part of next week.

Have a good Tuesday..
