Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Monday / 29 January 2018

… Sunshine to Start the New Week …
… Another Cold Front Moves Through Texas Thursday …
… Clouds Increase Late Week into the Weekend.. Holding Off on Rain Chances…

On the Weather Map…

On the surface map… a surface cold front is moving southward along a line from central Arkansas.. north Texas into far west Texas then northwestward into northeastern New Mexico into Colorado. South southeastward moving high pressure, in the wake of the front, is centered over the Dakota and southern Canada. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds are light northerly.

On the upper air map… a broad trough, or line, of upper air low pressure area is over the eastern 2/3rds of the USA with a high pressure ridge extending northeastward from southern California into the intermountain west. As a result of the upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our local area are westerly 50 to 60 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

As we start the new week, a dry and stable air mass prevails over the area as another cold front moves southward across Texas. High pressure, over the northern plains, will build south southeastward into the area by tonight into Tuesday.

As the high moves eastward, we’ll see a return to a southerly surface wind by late tomorrow into tomorrow night.

Low level moisture will increase Wednesday night into Thursday with more in the way of cloud cover expected. This will occur as a cold front slips south southeastward through Texas. Limited low level moisture and atmospheric instability will keep rain chances out of the forecast.

As cooler air settles southward over the area Thursday into Friday, a series of upper air low pressure disturbances will move overhead with increasing clouds. At this point, given the widely divergent computer model guidance and overall low precipitation probability, I will hold off of rain chances at this point.

A second cold front will move into Texas and across the local area by late afternoon into the evening hours Sunday. Cooler temperatures will prevail for the first part of next
week.

Have a good Monday..
