Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Tuesday / 07 November 2017

.. A Strong Dry Cold Front Due Later Today into Tonight ..
.. Rain Showers Possible over the Next 24 to 36 Hours ..
.. Partly Cloudy and A Little Warmer Late Week into the Weekend ..
.. Another Cold Front Due Early Sunday ..

On the Weather Map…
On the surface map… a cold front extends southwestward from northern Alabama and Mississippi where it becomes stationary southwestward through northwestern Louisiana into central Texas then west northwestward through west Texas and eastern New Mexico. As a result of this surface weather pattern, being just south of the front as of mid morning, our surface winds across south central Texas are southerly.

On the upper air map… a rather zonal (west-to-east) upper level wind continues over the USA. Within this upper air flow, a east southeastward moving upper air trough.. or line of upper air low pressure.. extends from Hudson Bay southwestward into the northern USA plains and the Rockies. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our area are west northwesterly 60 to 65 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

Just in advance of the cold front to our immediate north, another warmer than average day is expected especially in the south and southwestern parts of south central Texas. The front may begin to slide into the northern parts of the metro Austin area by afternoon which would result in cooler temperatures by afternoon in the northern parts of the IH35 corridor.

By tonight, as the southeastward moving upper air low pressure disturbance, currently located over the northern and central USA, moves east southeastward, the surface cold front will then surge quickly southward out of our area and then off the Texas coast with much cooler air settling southward into our entire area. With parts of the upper air disturbance remaining to the west of the area, we’ll see some overrunning cloud cover and some rain chances back in the cooler air tonight as well as tomorrow into early tomorrow night.

Clouds will break with a slow warming trend getting underway by early Thursday into Friday.

Clouds will pick up again Saturday into Saturday night as a south southeasterly surface wind returns ahead of yet another cold front due in the morning hours on Sunday. A few sprinkles may develop Saturday into Sunday ahead of and along the front with cooler temperatures expected Sunday into Monday.

Have a good Tuesday….
