Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Monday / 06 November 2017

.. Warmer Than Average Temperatures and Muggy Conditions Continue ..
.. A Strong Dry Cold Front Due with a Chance of Rain Tomorrow Night ..
.. Much Cooler with Clouds and Some Rain Chances Mid Into Late Week ..

On the Weather Map…
On the surface map… a cold front extends southwestward from middle and western Tennessee into a surface low over southern Arkansas and then continuing westward through north and west Texas and northeastern New Mexico. Surface high pressure, behind the front, is centered from the he Dakotas and Minnesota northwestward into southwestern Canada. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds across south central Texas are southerly.

On the upper air map… a rather zonal (west-to-east) upper level wind continues over the USA. A strong southeastward moving upper air trough.. or line of upper air low pressure.. extends from Hudson Bay west southwestward into the Pacific Northwest. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our area are westerly 60 to 65 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

A muggy weather pattern continues over south central Texas with a southerly surface wind continuing. Record high temperatures have been tied or broken at the first order climate sites in the Austin metro area over the last few days and it continues to be possible both today and tomorrow as well above average temperatures continue.

As the southeastward moving upper air low pressure disturbance, currently located from south central Canada into the Pacific Northwest, moves east southeastward through the plains states, the cold front – over north Texas now – will surge through the area by tomorrow night with much cooler air settling southward into our area. Even though moisture will be available, instability will be limited; as a result, we’ll see scattered rain showers over the area just ahead of and along the front as it moves through. With parts of the upper air disturbance remaining to the west of the area, we’ll see some overrunning cloud cover and some rain chances back in the cooler air Wednesday into Wednesday night.

Clouds will break with a slow warming trend getting underway Thursday into Friday.

Clouds will pick up again Saturday into Saturday night as a south southeasterly surface wind returns ahead of yet another cold front due in the morning hours on Sunday. A few sprinkles may develop Saturday into Sunday ahead of and along the front with cooler temperatures expected Sunday into Monday.

Have a good Monday….
