Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Monday / 30 October 2017

.. Sunshine and Warmer Temperatures Today ..
.. Clouds Increase Tonight into Tomorrow ..
.. Much Cooler with Rain Chances Tomorrow into Early Wednesday ..
.. Partly Cloudy with Much Warmer Temperatures Late Week through Weekend ..

On the Weather Map…
On the surface map… surface high pressure is east of the area over the northern Gulf of Mexico. A low pressure area is located over Lake Superior with a cold front extending south into Illinois and Missouri into Oklahoma then westward across the Texas Panhandle into northeastern New Mexico then northward into Colorado. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds across south central Texas are southerly.

On the upper air map… a dynamic deep trough, or line, of upper air low pressure stretches southward from the Great Lakes states into the eastern two thirds of the USA. Another upper level low is situation along the southern coastal areas of southern California coast. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our area are west southwesterly 30 to 35 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

Sunshine and warmer temperatures will prevail today before clouds thicken and lower across the area tonight with the approach of the upper level low to our distant west.

As the clouds pick up, another cold front will move into the area around midnight tonight and then pull up stationary just to our south as much cooler surface temperatures settle back into our area. As the upper level low pressure area approaches from the west, an overrunning pattern will become established with rain showers and even a few thunderstorms beginning tomorrow then becoming likely Tuesday night. Current NWS guidance indicates 1/2 to 1 inch of rain, on average, locally for tomorrow through tomorrow night and early Wednesday.

As the upper level low pressure area departs the area and the stationary from to our south returns northward as a warm front, we’ll see rain chances decrease quickly and the clouds breaking to partly cloudy Wednesday morning.

I expect a dry and more stable weather pattern to develop area wide Wednesday through the end of the week into the upcoming weekend. In addition, with the increased sunshine, we’ll see afternoon high temperatures warm to well above seasonal levels.

Have a good Monday….
