Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Friday / 27 October 2017

.. A Cold Front Passed in the Predawn Hours this Morning ..
.. A Much Cooler and Drier Weather Pattern for the Weekend ..
.. Clouds and Rain Chances by Early and Mid Next Week ..

On the Weather Map…
On the surface map… a low pressure area is located over the Great Lakes region with a strong cold front south southwestward into the Missouri Bootheel then across northern Louisiana to along just onshore the Texas coast then into the Rio Grande country of south Texas into Mexico. High pressure, behind the front, is building south southeastward from eastern Montana and eastern Wyoming into the western Dakotas. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds across south central Texas are gusty north northwesterly.

On the upper air map… a dynamic deep trough, or line, of upper air low pressure stretches south southwestward from Hudson Bay and then into Texas. Upper level high pressure is situated north/south along the west coast of the USA. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our area are westerly 60 to 65 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

A strong cold front, in association with a passing upper air low pressure disturbance, has passed across our area in the predawn hours today.

Under a clear sky, cooler and drier air will once again dominate for the upcoming weekend with the coolest air so far for the fall season. Overnight lows for Friday night and Saturday night will reach the 30s in most areas away from urban areas.

Winds will shift back south southeasterly Sunday into Monday ahead of another cold front which is expected to move into our area Tuesday. At this point, the front is expected to weaken overhead with several passing upper level low pressure disturbances contributing to an increase in cloud cover and better rain and even thunderstorm chances. Current NWS guidance indicates 1/2 to 1 inch of rain, on average, locally for Tuesday into Wednesday of next week.

Have a good Friday….
