Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Tuesday / 03 October 2017

.. Better Rain Chances Through Early Thursday ..
.. More Sunshine Late Week through the Weekend ..
.. Stronger Cold Front By Early Next Week ..

On the Weather Map…
On the surface map… surface high pressure is over Maine and the extreme northeastern USA. A surface low is over northwestern Iowa with an attached southeastward moving cold front that runs southwestward into eastern Nebraska and central and western Kansas then westward along the Colorado/New Mexico border. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds across south central Texas are easterly.

Upper air map… upper level high pressure extends eastward from Texas into the eastern USA. A deep broad trough, or line, of upper level low pressure extends from south and western Canada over the western half of the USA with one disturbance within the counterclockwise flow around this low over northwestern North Dakota (moving northeastward) with another stronger upper level disturbance (moving southeastward) over northern California. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our area are west southwesterly about 25 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

A slug of moisture, marked with clouds and scattered rain showers and thunderstorms, over the northern and western Gulf of Mexico is moving ashore onto the Texas coast on this Tuesday. Clouds have thickened with rain and thunderstorm chances continuing through tomorrow before decreasing by tomorrow night and into early Thursday. The latest National Weather Service rainfall guidance suggests that most areas will end up seeing 1/4 to 1/2 inch of rain with isolated heavier totals.

A drier and more stable weather pattern will once again take hold by Thursday into Friday and over the upcoming weekend.

Initial guidance suggests a stronger cold front for Texas by next Tuesday morning with much cooler temperatures following its passage through the area. As it moves through the area, scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are possible.

Have a good Tuesday….
