Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Friday / 01 September 2017

.. A Dry and Stable Late Summer Weather Pattern ..
.. Watching an Approaching Stronger Cold Front for Next Tuesday Night ..

On the Weather Map…
On the surface map… the remnants of tropical cyclone Harvey are located, as a developing surface low along a cold front, over middle Tennessee. A trough, or line, of low pressure extends southward from a surface low over eastern Colorado into eastern New Mexico. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds across south central Texas are light and variable.

Upper air map… upper level low pressure is located over middle Tennessee within a deepening trough over the eastern half of the country. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our area are north northeasterly 25 to 35 mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

A dry and stable weather pattern continues over the area and is expected to through most of the upcoming Labor Day weekend.

By the early part of next week, we’ll need to monitor a southward moving cold front that will move into Texas from the north and move quickly through our area by late Tuesday night. Ahead of the front, models suggest very slim chances of rain well in advance of the front on Sunday but the main chance would come as the front passes late Tuesday into Tuesday night. I am not convinced about Sunday rain chances, so I will not include, at least at this point, rain chances in my forecast. I do expect scattered rain showers and thunderstorms to develop in advance of the southward moving cold front late Tuesday into Tuesday night but any precipitation should shut off quickly after frontal passage.

Once the front passes, we’ll see cooler and drier air take hold for the middle part of next week. The area of potential disturbed weather that I talked about yesterday over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico is now expected to move eastward in advance of the southward moving cold front so we are no longer concerned about Texas coastal impacts.

Have a good Friday….
