Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Thursday / 31 August 2017

.. A Dry and Stable Late Summer Weather Pattern ..
.. Watching an Approaching Cold Front and Another Potential Tropical Weather System for Next Week ..

On the Weather Map…
On the surface map… the remnants of tropical cyclone Harvey are located around Greenville, MS. A trough, or line, of low pressure extends southward from a surface low over eastern Colorado into eastern New Mexico. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds across south central Texas are light and variable.

Upper air map… upper level high pressure, acting like a “lid” on the atmosphere, is over the southwestern USA with another upper level high well to the east of the Atlantic Ocean and the southeastern USA. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over our area are north northwesterly 10 to 20mph.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…

A dry and stable weather pattern continues over the area and is expected to through most of the upcoming Labor Day weekend.

By the early part of next week, we’ll need to monitor a southward moving cold front that will move into Texas from the north and, unfortunately, perhaps another developing tropical weather system over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. The NWS/National Hurricane Center says the system has a 20% (or low) probability of development as it is expected to drift northward toward the Texas coast. The National Hurricane Center says, if this system develops, it could bring additional rains to parts of Texas and Louisiana by the early to mid part of next week. Because of the high degree of uncertainty, I will only mention slim rain chances locally beginning Tuesday and continuing and increasing slowly through the remainder of the seven day forecast period.

Have a good Thursday….
