Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Thursday / 20 April 2017

.. A Cold Front Due with A Few Thunderstorms Late Tomorrow Night into Saturday ..
.. Cooler Temps for the Weekend ..

On this Thursday… a low pressure area is over the eastern Texas panhandle with a cold front extending westward into east central New Mexico and into northeastern Arizona. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds across south central Texas are south southeasterly.

In the upper levels of the atmosphere, a rather zonal (or west-to-east) upper level wind flow continues across the USA with a weak low pressure disturbance sitting rather stationary over the lower Mississippi Valley into the Gulf of Mexico. Another trough.. or line.. of upper air low pressure has moved ashore on the northwestern coast of the USA. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over south central Texas are relatively light and variable.

A more stable atmospheric environment continues with a mix of clouds and sunshine and warmer temperatures through tomorrow.

By late tomorrow night into Saturday, the stronger upper air low pressure disturbance, to our distant northwest, will travel eastward into the plains states with an associated southeastward moving surface cold front. At this point, it appears that the front will pass through the area in the hours around sunrise Saturday with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms expected over the area. The NWS/Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a marginal to slight risk of severe thunderstorms over parts of north Texas and central and southern Oklahoma.

Skies will clear and temperatures will cool a bit in the wake of the front midday Saturday on into Sunday with a drier and more stable air mass in place over the area as surface high pressure builds in from the northwest in the wake of the front.

Southerly surface winds will return early next week as the surface high pressure.. that moves into our area in the wake of the front.. moves east of our area.

Have a good Thursday….
