Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Wednesday / 22 February 2017

… A Dry and Stable Weather Pattern …
… Another Dry Cold Frontal Passage Friday …
… Another Low Pressure Area/Cold Frontal Passage by Mid Next Week …

On this Wednesday… weak high pressure is over northern Arkansas and southern Missouri with a trough, or line, of surface low pressure from eastern Kansas across the Oklahoma panhandle and southward across est Texas. As a result, our surface winds across south central Texas are westerly.

In the upper levels of the atmosphere.. a strong upper level low pressure is over the northeastern Gulf of Mexico with a ridge, or line, of upper air high pressure from northern Mexico northeastward across Texas into Missouri. Our upper level winds, at about 30,000 feet overhead, are west northwesterly 65 to 70 mph.

A dry and stable weather pattern continues over the area. Temperatures, with the drier air mass in place, will warm with temperatures through the remainder of the week expected to be well above seasonal averages.

Another quick moving cold front.. this one actually accompanied by a little cooler air.. will move through the area by late Friday afternoon into Friday evening. Low level moisture return ahead of the front will be minimal so I do not anticipate rainfall with the front. Temperatures will cool just a bit with abundant sunshine Friday night into Saturday.

The third low pressure area and surface cold front that I’ve been talking about looks now to be delayed until the Wednesday time period next week. As a result of the system being slowed a bit, I think we’ll see a better moisture return to the area which should result in better rain chances when the front arrives. Since this period is just beyond the reach of my seven day forecast, I not mention any rain chances in this forecast.

Have a good Wednesday….
