Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Monday / 20 February 2017

… After Overnight Thunderstorms, A Drier and More Stable Weather Pattern …
… Another Dry Cold Frontal Passage Friday …
… Another Low Pressure Area/Cold Frontal Passage Due Sunday with Some Rain …

On this Monday… a weak cold front extends southward from western Oklahoma to the Texas Rio Grande River around Laredo. Another southeastward moving cold front extends from southwestern Kansas across the Texas panhandle and into New Mexico. As a result of this surface weather pattern and the overnight rains, our surface winds across south central Texas are light and variable.

In the upper levels of the atmosphere.. a deep upper level though.. or line of upper level low pressure.. extends southward from western Kansas southward across west Texas. Our upper level winds, at about 30,000 feet overhead, are southerly 80 to 90 mph.

In the wake of the upper air disturbance, just west of the area this morning, we’ll see the two cold fronts to our north and west to move eastward with drier air moving into our area by this afternoon with decreasing clouds.

Tonight into tomorrow, clouds will continue to decrease with skies becoming mostly clear. Temperatures, with a drier air mass in place, will warm with temperatures tomorrow through Thursday expected to be well above seasonal averages.

Another quick moving cold front.. this one actually accompanied by a little cooler air.. will move through the area Friday morning into midday. Low level moisture return ahead of the front will be minimal so I do not anticipate rainfall with the front. Temperatures will cool just a bit with abundant sunshine Friday into Saturday.

A third low pressure area and surface cold front will traverse the area by Sunday with enough low level moisture return ahead of the front to include a chance of rain showers and maybe a thunderstorm with the front.

Have a good Monday….
