Austin / Travis County and South Central Texas Weather Update #4  (Last Update)
Prepared by UT University/Incident Meteorologist Troy Kimmel
230pm CT – Wednesday / 28 March 2018

.. Rain Chances Decrease Into Tonight As Upper Level Low Completes Its Move Across Texas ..
.. NWS Austin-San Antonio Issued Flash Flood Watch Continues Until 7pm …

At mid afternoon.. the complex of rain showers and thunderstorms.. that moved through our
area in the late morning into midday time period.. has now moved east of the area and extends
from northeast Texas and the ArkLaTex southwestward to west of Victoria and the middle Texas
coastal plains. It continues to move eastward.

We still need to be watching for some additional rain shower and even isolated thunderstorm development
since we still have about 12 hours until the upper level trough actually crosses overhead and moves east of the area.
However, being in the rain cooled more stable surface air, I feel like the severe thunderstorm risk as well
as the heavier rain risk has ended locally. As a result, this will be my last statement on this weather event.

At our first order climate and airport weather stations in the IH35 corridor areas since midnight…
Austin Bergstrom International Airport…. 5.83″ (breaks previous daily rainfall record of 1.86″ on this date back in 2006)
Austin City / Camp Mabry ANG… 3.20″ (record for today is 3.26″ back on this date in 2006 – not broken at this point)
Austin Executive Airport / East of Toll Road in Pflugerville… 3.66″
Georgetown Municipal Airport…. 2.23″
San Marcos Regional Airport…. 3.40″
Lago Vista Rusty Allen Airport…. 1.61″

Austin / Travis County and South Central Texas Weather Update #3
Prepared by UT University/Incident Meteorologist Troy Kimmel
1015am CT – Wednesday / 28 March 2018

.. Another Round of Rain Showers and Thunderstorms over the Next Couple of Hours ..
.. NWS Austin-San Antonio Issued Flash Flood Watch Continues Until 7pm …

At mid morning.. another developing complex of rain showers and thunderstorms..
to our south southwest.. is sweeping east northeastward as it expands northward a bit.
These thunderstorms have produced / are producing some quarter size (1.00″) or
larger in the area from San Antonio westward. I think that most of the strongest
thunderstorm activity will remain south of the Austin metro area but I do expect
frequent lightning in the Austin metro area and the IH35 corridor with scattered to
numerous thunderstorms through midday. Some hail may occur in areas mainly south
of Austin. Additional rainfall in the Austin metro area/IH35 corridor will average
somewhere in the 1/4 to 1/2 inch range with heavier rain possible to the south of the area.

Overnight rainfall was, on average, mostly in the 1 to 3 inch range, but pockets of 4 to
5 inch amounts occurred, based on the LCRA Hydromet gauge network, in eastern parts
of Travis County as well as central and eastern parts of Hays County.

By late tonight into Thursday, the upper level low pressure area as well as the last in a
series of weak fronts will move through the area with clouds and rain chances decreasing
and, indeed, sunshine, westerly winds and warmer temperatures returning for most of the
day tomorrow.

A secondary cold front will pass through the area tomorrow night with cooler temperatures,
under a mostly clear sky, tomorrow night into Friday.

Monitoring…
