TK’s Weather Update for Tuesday / 25 July 2017 ….

.. A Typical Dry Summer Weather Pattern Continues ..

On the Weather Map…
Surface map… weak surface low pressure extends southward from eastern Colorado southward into eastern New Mexico. A stationary front extends westward from northern Tennessee into northern Arkansas then back northward as a warm front into a low pressure area over central South Dakota. Otherwise, weak high pressure is centered to our west over the four corners region and well as over the Gulf of Mexico and the southeastern USA. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds across south central Texas are southerly.

Upper air map… a trough, or line, of upper level low pressure is moving slowly eastward off the Pacific into northern California with another located from eastern Hudson Bay across the St. Lawrence River Valley and the northeastern USA. Upper air high pressure, acting like a “lid” on the atmosphere, covers the south central USA over Oklahoma and northwest Texas. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over south central Texas are light and variable.

What I am Seeing As I Look Ahead…
The southeasterly moving upper air disturbance, that resulted in strong thunderstorms over parts of Williamson and northwestern Travis counties yesterday, is no longer a factor as a more stable air mass takes hold over our area.

Through the balance of the week, I see a typically dry summer weather pattern continuing as the upper level “lid” continues on the atmosphere as upper level high pressure continues over the area. As we saw yesterday, we could always see an isolated buildup due to afternoon heating, but over the next few days, the coverage should be minimal so I will not include it my forecast. The latest NWS/Weather Prediction Center guidance suggests little if any precipitation through the end of the week. Temperatures will continue to be above seasonal averages through the balance of the week.

As mentioned yesterday, by the weekend there are indications that the upper level low pressure trough over the eastern USA will deepen a bit with another upper air disturbance diving southeastward through the Mississippi Valley with a cold front moving southeastward into areas of Oklahoma and Arkansas and then “backdooring” its way into northeast Texas. As a result of the front settling southwestward into Texas and the air mass becoming more unstable, I will mention widely scattered rain showers and thunderstorms beginning Saturday and continuing into early next week with temperatures coming down only a few degrees due to the increased cloud cover and overall more unstable air mass.

Have a good Tuesday….
