Forecasting Austin and South Central Texas Weather Since 1984

Updated 915am CT – Friday / 21 April 2017

.. A Cold Front Due Overnight with A Few Thunderstorms..
.. Cooler Temps for the Weekend ..
.. Quiet Weather Through First Half of Next Week ..

On this Friday… a low pressure area is over the north Texas with a cold front extending westward into central New Mexico. As a result of this surface weather pattern, our surface winds across south central Texas are south southeasterly.

In the upper levels of the atmosphere, a trough.. or line of upper level low pressure.. is deepening over the central USA. As a result of this upper air weather pattern, the 30,000 foot winds over south central Texas are west southwesterly 35 to 45 mph.

By late tonight into early tomorrow, the stronger upper air low pressure disturbance, to our north and northwest, will travel eastward into the plains states with an associated southeastward moving surface cold front. At this point, it appears that the front will pass through the area in the hours around sunrise tomorrow with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms expected over the area. The NWS/Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a slight to enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms over parts of north Texas and central and southern Oklahoma.

Skies will clear and temperatures will cool a bit in the wake of the front midday Saturday on into Sunday with a drier and more stable air mass in place over the area as surface high pressure builds in from the northwest in the wake of the front.

Southerly surface winds will return early next week as the surface high pressure.. that moves into our area in the wake of the front.. moves east of our area.

Another cold front moves into west Texas by next Thursday but I’m holding off of any rain chances until we get a better idea when the front might move into our area; current guidance suggests that the front will stay northwest of our area through next Thursday.

Have a good Friday….
